JESSE OWENS
Hi Folks,
Today I am going to tell you about a great sportsman named Jesse Owens.
Jesse Owens was born on September 12, 1913 in Oakville, Alabama, USA to Henry
Cleveland Owens and Emma Fitzgerald. Jesse
Owens' real name was James Cleveland Owens. 'JC' was his nickname, on his first
day at a public school his teacher misheard 'JC' as 'Jesse' due to his strong
southern accent and this is how James Cleveland Owens changed to Jesse Owens.
For his early education, he went to Fairmount Junior High School. There
he met his high school track coach,
Charles Riley. Charles Riley let him practice before school. Owens
started his career as a track and field athlete in 1928. Throughout his high
school he won every event he participated in including the Ohio State
Championship, three years in a row.
Jesse Owens used to work in a shoe repair shop
after school and found his passion for running at that time.
Jesse Owens got attraction after his
win in the National High School Championship at Chicago in 1933. He had set a
new high school world record by running a 100 yards long track in 9.4 seconds.
In 1935, Owens took part in the Big Ten Championships and broke 3 world records
and won 4 individual events. Just before the competition, he was
suffering from a sore back, his coach had advised him not to participate and
take rest. He didn't practice for a few weeks but still was capable and made
history.
Owens then participated in the 1936 Berlin
Summer Olympics and made his most remarkable accomplishments. Adolf
Hitler had used these Olympics to increase the personality and showcase the
Germans as a high race. Jesse Owens
challenged them and became the first ever American track and field athlete to
win four gold medals in a single Olympics. Also to fact, his long jump record
at the Berlin Olympics remained unbroken till 25 years that is till 1961.
In Berlin, Jesse Owens received sponsorship from Adidas. He was also
asked to compete in Sweden but refused and returned to his own country. He had
thought that he would receive some appreciation on winning in the Olympics but
due to prevailing racial discrimination nothing was done. He did not receive
any special award from President Roosevelt and also did not congratulate Owens.
He later left the university and started finding a job for himself to earn a
decent livelihood.
After retirement from the Amateur Athletics, he served as a boys' guide and
also got a chance to become a US goodwill, he also served as the secretary of
the Illinois State Athletic Commission.
It is an irony that during his life, he did
not get the respect which he deserved even though he displayed his great grit
and devotion to his country.
Jesse Owens died on March 31, 1980 at the age of 66 due to lung cancer.
Later, in life he was honoured.
In 1970 he got included in the Alabama Sports
Hall of fame. In 1976, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In
1990, posthumously, he was presented with the highest expression of national
appreciation the Congressional Gold Medal. An asteroid that was discovered the
same year was named after Jesse Owens. He was also depicted on two US postage
stamps. Many roads, schools, parks and stadiums are named after him as tribute.
His commitment and perseverance
will inspire the generations to come.
